choosing a nappy type

types of cloth nappy

Cloth nappies can be grouped into two main types, All-in-one and Two Piece.

All-in-one

The ultimate in convenience. It goes on just the same as a disposable. Most All -in-ones are pocket nappies which means the absorbent layer comes out of the waterproof pocket for washing and drying. This speeds up drying times. You can add extra absorbency boosters easily for night time or heavy wetters.

These come either in adjustable one size versions which are suitable from birth to potty, or in sized versions that are more slim fitting but you will need to buy the next size up as your baby grows.

Two piece

Two piece nappies go on in two parts. First the absorbent inner nappy, then the waterproof outer (the wrap). Often the absorbent inner nappy comes with one or more absorbency inserts. These serve to add absorbency without adding to drying times.

Nappies also vary in what absorbent materials they use, some common types of fabrics are:

Cotton - natural, medium drying time, can be washed at very high temperatures.

Bamboo  - natural, highly absorbent, longer drying time, antibacterial properties

Microfibre - synthetic, quick drying time

choosing for your family

When choosing a cloth nappy type(s) for your baby some factors to take into account are:

Drying facilities

Some nappies dry quicker than others and this may influence how many and what type(s) you choose.

Price

There is a big variety in price and only you can balance the price you pay with the convenience you need. Online bargains are often available and there is a thriving pre-loved (second hand) market.

Ethical views

You may prefer to buy certified organic cotton and oeko-tex certified bamboo.

Birth to potty sets

These can represent great value if the nappy suits you and your baby. Having the one type means all your nappies are interchangeable (like having just black socks!). Many cloth nappy users use a few different types, some find one type more absorbent for night use and another less bulky for day use. It can be fun to mix and match and work out what combinations work best for nighttime, daytime and outings.
