getting started with cloth nappies

Once you've decided on your nappy, here's what you'll need to buy to get started.

Nappies, 20 should be sufficient if you will be washing every two days and line drying, but consult your retailer. You'll need to make provision for around 8 nappy changes a day. Wraps need only to be changed once a day or if soiled.

1 nappy bucket (with a lid that seals); many parents buy 2 buckets but one will get you started.

2 net bags for the bucket (then you can bung the nappies in the bag into the washing machine).

Teatree oil (to keep the nappy bucket sweet smelling and a few drops in the softener compartment of your washing machine to act as a disinfectant).

Washing solution/powder (non-bio, you only need a tiny bit so residue doesn’t build up in the nappy and irritate sensitive bums).

Nappy liners (to catch poo). Either the flushable kind that you buy on a roll (they look like a large roll of toilet paper) or washable ones.

Wipes (for cleaning bum at changing time). The choices are: cotton wool and water (for newborns), standard, biodegradable, or cloth wipes(you can make these yourself from terry or muslin).
